THE Southern Downs has four new Australian citizens this week following a ceremony at the March council meeting at the Stanthorpe chambers last week.
Southern Downs mayor Peter Blundell said it was wonderful to see the small group of excited and happy people at the council chamber and especially family members of the new citizens.
“It’s quite special to be part of their day as they become an Australian citizen and we were all proud to sing the national anthem with them and take photos of the important ceremony,“ he said
Countries of origin for the new citizens included Canada, Sri Lanka and India.
All new citizens are presented with a certificate and an Australian native plant as a welcome gift.
“We hope the plants take pride of place in the gardens of our new citizens and grow along side them and their families,“ Cr Blundell said.
