Sam to take the reins

Sam Thaiday was confirmed as the Brisbane Broncos captain in season 2012 on Tuesday before the ink had dried on his new long-term contract with the club.
The 26-year-old who hails from Townsville (one the Cowboys let get away) spoke of his pride in being the second indigenous captain to lead the Broncos. Gorden Tallis, one of Thaiday’s heroes as a child, is the other.
In a ringing endorsement of his replacement, retiring captain Darren Lockyer said there are many similarities between Sam and champion Broncos captain Alan Langer. You might think that’s a fairly long bow given the obvious. Lockyer explained, “He’s (Sam) always been a character and a joker. I think it’s good to have that.”
“Sam’s got the serious side to him but he can also make the group laugh and lighten the mood, which is one of his many leadership qualities and something Alfie was good at doing.”
Well I guess like Alfie he doesn’t give his opponents much to smile about but Broncos fans will be hoping he can keep them smiling long after Locky’s departure.
