Ignoring referendum results

Dr Paul Williams (Courier Mail, January 24) talks about adding to the constitution through referendum voting, but when the people voted at previous referendums the government ignored their vote and continued to act in direct contravention of the referendum result. Clearly referendum results and the will of the people that go against the government’s wishes are then illegally ignored. So who enforces the referendum vote result – how do the people force the government to carry out their vote? Who legally punishes the government for blatantly ignoring the voice of the people? The police and courts punish us for breaches of law. How do the people punish members of government for ignoring their will – what is the vehicle? Will the police arrest the PM and cabinet and charge them for ignoring the referendum will of the people?
