Garden time

Brunsfelia.

By Beatrice Hawkins

As I have been about looking at gardens in various areas over the last few weeks I have noticed many Brunfelsia shrubs in beautiful, fragrant, full flower. Known commonly by a variety of names the most common is “yesterday, today and tomorrow” and is very apt as the flowers start out as deep purple, fade the next day to lilac and finally on the third day are white or cream.

They are most fragrant in the evening and are really another hardy, beautiful shrub to plant almost anywhere. Recently I have seen them growing from St George to Goondiwindi to Killarney to here in Warwick and all doing well. So obviously they cope with a wide range of soils and climates. They, like many things, prefer good drainage and soil but adapt well with a little care. They do not take well to heavy frosts or extreme heat and I have noticed that the ones in the western areas are planted where they receive shade during the hottest times.

They are native to Brazil and are named for a German monk, Otto Brunfels. They will grow to 10 feet high and 12 feet wide but don’t mind a prune to keep them in shape. They are a dense shrub and a pruning only enhances this. They will flower continuously from spring right through to autumn and can successfully be grown in a large pot. A lovely shrub to plant close to a house or outdoor area where you can enjoy their delightful perfume.
