Smoothie Challenge for Oaks residents

All students would agree that making smoothies is a lot of fun, especially doing it with your friends.
The Year 11 students from The School of Total Education took the idea a step further and turned it into a fundraiser.
“Service is a part of the school’s ethos and, to express that, the class had taken the Oaks Aged Care residents for a walk along the river. Both the residents and the students really enjoyed the activity,” said home group teacher Ian Rolling.
Through the exercise, the students realised that there is a cost to getting the residents out on such activities.
“We wanted to raise some money to help them come out again, by paying for taxi fares. So we came up with the smoothie idea,” student Sam Johnson said.
The Year 11 students decided to make smoothies for the rest of the school and charge them a small price for a delicious beverage.
In total, they made about 200 drinks in two hours and made a total of $303.
“The smoothies were top notch, they tasted great,” Mr Rolling said.
“That’s why it went so well. The great thing was that it totally came from the students themselves,” he said.
“The next step is to arrange another walk by the river. We are really looking forward to it as, once you get to know them, they are such cool old folk,” student Gerard Settgast said.
