The official opening of the Woodenbong Fire Brigade’s training facility built on Githabul land attracted a huge crowd consisting of brigade members, dignitaries and audience.
After 13 years of fundraising by the brigade members, local community members and businesses, events supporters and sponsors, many, many hours of voluntary labour often in very trying conditions, fruition has been achieved.
Apologies were received from the Hon Michael Gallacher MLC, Minister for Police and Emergency. Present were Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons ASFM, Thomas George MP, State Member for Lismore, Chief Superintendent Brett Condie, Region North Manager and Superintendent Michael Brett, Northern Rivers DTZ Manager, along with others who had travelled far for this special day. They were welcomed by Greg Gulliver, captain of the Woodenbong Fire Brigade in his opening speech.
He related the history of the beginning in 1960, 52 years of the local fire brigade to its present day, and warmly welcomed foundation members including the inaugural captain Ken ‘Pappy’ McLennan who is still an active member performing duties, for which Greg thanked him, and the also present, Bede Frawley who was a key part of the brigade for 30 years.
Captain Gulliver said, “On behalf of the brigade members, I would like to formally thank the community and the Rural Fire Service for the support given during this project. This is truly a great achievement for a small community and, without this help, these types of facilities would not get off the ground.”
Commissioner Fitzsimmons spoke of what a milestone had been reached from a humble beginning and very difficult conditions to achieve such a wonderful and useful facility, which will not only be used as a training centre, but could also be utilised as an emergency base.
He said how timely this was, to be prepared for the coming bushfire season after all the wet weather auguring for a very busy season ahead.
He congratulated the unit for their achievements and presented a plaque and flag to Captain Gulliver in recognition.
Mr George, during his speech, noted the local brigade has 34 members, a quite remarkable number for the local population numbers, and said thanks should also go to local employers and family members for their support for, without this, it would be impossible to do the remarkable work they do.
He, along with ‘Pappy’, unveiled the Official Opening Certificate to much applause from the audience.
It was pleasing to see former members Bede Frawley, Bill Mitchell and their families return to Woodenbong for this very special day.
After the ceremony, morning tea was hosted by hospitality students from the Woodenbong Central School and was enjoyed by all, which allowed time to inspect the new building and equipment, take photographs, chat to the dignitaries and visitors and reminisce.
