Following today’s announcement by Buckingham Palace that the 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II had passed away peacefully overnight, Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi expressed his deepest condolences on behalf of the community.

“Today we mourn the loss of our Monarch Queen Elizabeth II,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the new King and the royal family, such a profound loss.

“The Queen’s reign will always be remembered as the greatest in the history of the British monarchy and it’s likely that her tenure will never be surpassed.

“The personal sacrifices and dedication made by Queen Elizabeth is extraordinary and I will always hold the utmost respect for her.

“When I think about her contribution, I feel that she can be described as the ultimate public servant, the best example of servant leadership we will ever see.

“Recently I had the pleasure of receiving a letter from the palace after writing to her to recognise her reaching 70 years on the throne, again a milestone that will be difficult to surpass.

“I extend our warm congratulations to the new King and wish him all the very best during this period of mourning and change.”
