Self defence during Mental Health Week

By Melissa Coleman

A four-week self-defence program is coming to Stanthorpe as part of Queensland Mental Health week.

Young people aged between 15 and 25 are encouraged to register their interest via the Southern Downs Regional Council website before Thursday 20 October.

Southern Downs Regional Downs acting community services coordinator Ellie Brackenborough said they were excited to be bringing the program to the Granite Belt region.

For some youth quiet or introspective moments are the best way to take time out for mental health, however others may need to expel some energy.

Connecting with yourself can come in a wide variety of activities depending on your individual circumstances.

The self-defence program is designed to give young people the opportunity to engage in a martial art course designed for them and the challenges of life.

“We have run the program previously, and we also have an expression of interest for Warwick youth via the website as well,” Ms Brackenborough said.

The two-hour long sessions will teach youth how to alleviate stress, increase self esteem and boost their focus while encouraging connection to their own body.

By moving about, making noise, and taking up space in a positive way youth are able to make a connection between life and their needs.

Queensland Mental Health week runs from 8-16 October.
