• Police Asked to Control Louts in Theatre – A policeman will be in attendance at all showings of films at the Arcadia Theatre from this week onwards to control larrikinism which has disrupted patrons. The owner, Mr. Marcomin, said there had been considerable misbehaviour over recent weeks and he found it had become impossible to control some young people’s actions. As a result, I have learned some people refused to attend the theatre.

• Protest at Theatre Behaviour “It had to be seen to be believed. The noise, screaming, shouting, stamping and vulgarity was an utter disgrace and what is worse it was coming from children aged about nine to 11 years. I can assure you if you have never been to the movies on a Saturday night in Stanthorpe, you should go as it’s an education of what the younger generation is becoming – a law unto themselves.” Disgusted.

• Students Ask for Hair Latitude We would like to bring to your attention the fact that the students of Stanthorpe State High School are continually being harassed by the principal, deputy principal and teachers because of the length of their hair and dresses. In this day and age it is fashionable to have long hair and short dresses. We have been told by teachers that if we refuse to get our hair cut and dresses made to suit their standards, that we will not be permitted to take part in socials and other school functions. This is out life and we should be entitled to run it the way we please. So, fair go, teachers!

• Two Resign Party As Protest Against Government’s Grant Refusal Mr.F.A. Rogers, Stanthorpe Chairman and Chairman of the Stanthorpe Co-operative Cannery Committee told 250 people that he had cancelled his subscription to the Country Party, of which he had been a member for 25 years – as a protest against government refusal to grant a half a million dollars to establish a cannery on the Granite Belt. Mr. A.J. Smith of Ballandean said he had also resigned and urged others who were members to do likewise. Neither the Premier or the Minister for Primary Industries, Mr. Roe, attended. Claimed that Cabinet members had been “aided and abetted“ by 5th columnists in the community. Had the people of the Granite Belt shown a united front from the inception of this project there would have been every reason to believe a fruit processing plant would be well on its way to reality. DSGC last week unanimously voted to support SCCC
