The Honky Tonk Rodeo Promotions had Killarney looking like a Hawaiian festival on Saturday night with many riders and spectators dressed in their best Hawaiian outfits at the Christmas in Killarney Bull and Bronc Santa Bash held at the Killarney Recreation Club.

The night was also an opportunity for the rodeo community to pay tribute to campdrafter Will Turner, who lost his life in a tragic road accident last month on a Southern Downs road.

Chris Munro, an official photographer with the National Rodeo Association, has been to many rodeos over the years but found this event a true sentiment of how tight-knit the rodeo community is.

“I loved the way the rodeo embraced the family and honoured Will in a way I’m sure he would have loved,” said Chris.

A banner of tribute to Will was displayed on the arena fencing with the campdrafting score phrase, ‘90 or nothing.’

The novice saddle bronc competition also became a tribute to Will, with the Will Turner Memorial Trophy awarded to the winner, Mitch Beutel.

“Will’s Mum and dad were there for the trophy presentation,” said Chris. “The presentation was really special, it was like a big group of people wrapping arms around the family saying we are here.”

“It must have been a huge effort for them. They thanked everyone for their support.”

Many of those competing knew Will and the ring announcer was described as being overwhelmed whilst the presentation was being made.

Will’s presence was felt throughout the event with his favourite songs played.

“The DJ was teed up to play a few songs young Will enjoyed,” said Chris.

The Honky Tonk rodeo, in all its hawaiian colour, was a special night and something the rodeo community will not forget.
