Work will start on nbn network upgrades in Glen Aplin in the coming weeks.

The upgrade work, which is being rolled out across Australia, is to provide access to faster speeds and extend the coverage of the nbn fixed wireless network. Tower infrastructure in particular is being improved.

Head of nbn local Queensland Kylie Lindsay said that in an effort to minimise inconvenience, nbn would aim to perform tower upgrade works between 10pm and 10am on week nights and over weekends when necessary.

“These tower works are critical to the delivery of our program but will mean that planned outages may affect homes and businesses and their ability to use their nbn service while the work is under way. We are asking the community to prepare for these outages and have back up connectivity if they need it,.” she said.

When complete, the investment will expand the reach of the existing nbn Fixed Wireless footprint by at least 50 per cent and will enable two new high speed fixed wireless plans – up to 100mbps and 250mbps. The additional capacity and reach will also mean that many Sky Muster satellite-only premises will be able to access nbn Fixed Wireless for the first time.

Ms Lindsay said upgrade works on a tower usually required a total of three to four planned service outages over one to two weeks.

“After the tower works are completed, we expect that many customers will experience an improvement in speeds on their nbn Fixed Wireless service,” he said.

Homes and businesses might need to update their nbn devices at their premises to get the benefits of the upgrades and that nbn would contact those impacted directly. Not all devices would need to be replaced.

People can check the network status page at www.nbnco.com.au/support/network-status on the nbn website and should also receive communication from their retail service provider about how the planned outages may impact them. The tower works will not impact nbn fixed line or nbn Sky Muster satellite services.
