Mystery tour leads back in time

Off on the mystery tour.

A mystery bus tour for a group of National Servicemen led many of them back to where it all began.

The tour, organised by the Stanthorpe Nashos, included a trip to Canungra and the training barracks very familiar to members of the group.

“An early start led to morning tea at scenic Moogerah Dam then travel through the beautiful country around Mt Alford, Boonah and Beaudesert to the lush vegetation of Canungra,” Stanthorpe Nashos President Mack Rees said.

“Outside Canungra, the next visit was the Australian Army Kokoda Barracks where a number of Nashos had spent part of their National Service jungle training in the early 1950s and 1960s.

“Here the group visited the Australian Army Intelligence Museum for a very informative session including the history of army intelligence dating back to 1900’s.” He said interest was so great that the organizers let the program go over time.

“This was so interesting that some participants plan revisiting,” he said.

Mr Rees said the visit was followed by a late picnic lunch at the beautiful Mt. Tamborine Botanic Gardens before heading back home.

“The trip was funded by a grant from the Stanthorpe RSL Services Club who through their grants support important Stanthorpe community non-profit clubs and organizations working for welfare of members,” he said.

“The organizers could not have had better cooperation from the Army staff at Canungra Kokoda Barracks and Crisps Coaches who went out of their way to provide a great driver and comfortable coach.”
