Week of firsts at Stanthorpe

Men's medal winner Richard Reardon (left) with club captain Brad Silver.

It was a number of firsts for golfers at Stanthorpe last Saturday 6 January.

It was the first competition for the year, the first monthly medal for the year, the first round to count for Golfer of the Year and the first of two rounds for the Foundation Cups for both men and ladies.

The club thanks club member, Sinbad, aka Ian Pickering, for sponsoring the day and putting on the prizes for the day.

The men’s medal event was a win for Richard Reardon with a nett score of 67, his first medal win for quite a number of years but he now has about seven of them. New ball finding glasses he wore on the day worked well.

Keith Jones continued his run of good golf to claim runner-up on the day after having the best of the count back. Brendon Barker had the lowest gross score and Matt Burgess had least putts, 24 for the round.

The ladies medal was won by Nikki Waterworth on nett 70, her first competition since being rid of the moon boot. New ladies’ captain, Lisa Stuart, collected runner-up on 72 as well as the low gross score of 87. The putting comp was won by Helen Jones with 29 putts. Good to see that Helen was not hiding under a table for this presentation.

In the run down, Christine Hood, Mandy Benussi, Len leigh and Barry Hughes did well. Men’s pin shots went to Tod Beckett, Darrell Boekholt and Ivan Juriss. Mandy Benussi collected the ladies approach at five and Nikki waterworth held the all in approach at 1/10. Tod Beckett and Kev Rowling also collected pro-pins at 5/14 and 9/18. NTPs for the ladies went to Lisa Stuart at 3 and 12 and to Helen Jones at 17.

The Foundation Cup event is played over two rounds for a total nett score. The two medal winners are now leading in their divisions and for the last few years, leaders after the first round have gone on to win the Cups. The decider is next weekend.

Saturday 13 January will be another stroke event and the final for the Foundation Cups. The day is being sponsored by club president, Len Leigh. The time sheet is available on-line.

Stanthorpe Sporters

Stanthorpe Sporters golfers got back underway last Sunday 7 January after a few weeks break over Christmas and New Year.

Some players turned up with Santa presents, Dick Hilton sporting a new and colourful driver. His drive off the first tee with the new club was very good, so assume he is going to keep it in the bag for a while.

The back nine was in play offering a chance of two pin shots for the nine holes. Leading the way for the round was Ivan Juriss and his nett 23 was the winning score. Close behind in second place was Matt Burgess with nett 25. Matt also collected the prize for best gross score with 35 which included a pair of birdies and an eagle, but a slight hiccup at hole 8, and the pin shot at hole 17.

Remaining prizes were won by John Rawlings in the run down and Paul Armstrong for the pin shot at 12. Irene Green, playing her first ever round of competition golf was awarded the ladies’ prize for the day.

Sporters on again next Sunday morning, all welcome and be ready to tee off at 8am.
