The Granite Belt Music Council (GBMC) is gearing up to make 2024 a memorable year for music enthusiasts on the Southern Downs.

With ongoing discussions surrounding revisions to the Cultural Community Wellbeing Precincts and the active involvement of external figures, the GBMC is optimistic about placing music at the forefront of the Southern Downs tourism scene.

GBMC president Kelvin Johnston said one of their main goals is to break free from the constraints of the EPA nuisance laws currently impeding their activities.

“I do not believe we should be tied up in the laws that prevent barking dogs or bats,” Kelvin said.

“Musicians add value to a place through tourism, economy and wellbeing.”

While the battle for legal recognition continues, the Music Council and the local music scene remain vibrant. The GBMC continues to organise events showcasing the region’s musical talent, making it a welcoming destination for visitors.

“We are continuing to work with the wineries to provide live music in those spaces and working together is what I believe we must do as a tourism destination,” Kelvin said.

The new year has already witnessed notable achievements by local musicians such as Nine Year Sister and Mitch King, who are gaining global recognition.

These artists, along with others, were given a platform by the Granite Belt Music Council to showcase their talents, and their success reflects the thriving music community.

“We support each artist that comes through and we get an immense amount of satisfaction seeing local artists being looked after and valued by the community,” Kelvin said.
