SPILLER AND CO HOLD OUT RIVALS

The Summit Team of John Shannon, Ray Spiller, Zel Zamprogno and skip Mark Spiller held on for a comfortable win in the recent Southern Downs Men’s Fours Championships.

Sixteen Teams initially took to the greens in the Championships held over the weekend of February 4th and 5th.

All teams played in the Sectional Play at the Southern Cross Bowls Club on the Saturday. The following teams won the sections- Section 1 – D. Stanley, T. Schubert, R. Capelli, S. Covill (The Summit) 2 wins plus 8 shots and Section 4 B. Johnstone, T. Heffernan, D. Rabbit, J. Simpson (Warwick) 2 wins plus 14 shots.

In the first semi played in Texas on the following Sunday Mark Spiller’s team started very well against their rivals and after six ends led Steve Martin’s team by ten shots to one.

The Summit combination made the most of the good start and never their opponents back into the game. They ran out winners clear winners by 24 shots to 8.

In the second semi between John Simpson’s team and Len Covill’s side the scores were much closer for a good part of the game. After fourteen ends the scores were tied at eleven all. Simpson’s team went on to win five of the last seven ends to win by 19 shots to 15.

The final between Mark Spiller and John Simpons’s teams began with both teams playing good bowls. Spiller’s team scored a five and a three to go to an early lead of eleven shots to four.

They managed to maintain this lead throughout the game despite some spirited bowling by their opposition and ran out winners with the score 24 shots to 12. The game was much closer than the final score indicated. There were some great bowls played by both sides with both skips playing some excellent recovery shots.

The district would like to thank both the, Southern Cross and Texas club, for the use of their facilities and greens. Both clubs should be congratulated on their hospitality. The Southern Cross ladies put on a great lunch and Richard did a great job with the BBQ at Texas.

The greens at both clubs ran well especially considering the amount of rain we have had recently.

Thanks to Lew Breen for running the event and umpiring.

The next district event is the pairs which will be held at the end of February.
