Recovery funding for affected clubs

Member for Southern Downs, Mr Lawrence Springborg, is encouraging local sporting and recreational clubs affected by the recent extreme weather event to apply for the Newman Government’s $1 million recovery fund, and start getting back on their feet.

Mr Springborg said clubs were eligible for grants up to $25,000 under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program, to replace much needed equipment and repair clubhouses and grounds.

“Grassroots sporting and recreation clubs are the backbone of the community and the Newman Government is committed to ensuring they’re able to get back to business as soon as possible,” Mr Springborg said.

Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson said the funding would be vital in assisting hundreds of damaged sporting and community clubs throughout the state to rebuild.

“It’s going to be a tough road to complete recovery but, with their local communities standing behind these clubs, they’ll be able to get back on their feet and return to normal activity,” Mr Dickson said.

“I’ll be working with sporting and recreation clubs all over Queensland in the coming weeks to ensure our department is doing everything in its power to assist.”

Mr Dickson recently toured some of the flood-affected regions across Queensland and witnessed first-hand the devastation left behind.

“Already I’ve seen the determination and resilience that Queenslanders are known for come to the fore, with clean-up efforts by club members and volunteers now well underway.”

One-off funding grants will be available to eligible flood-affected clubs and organisations in local government areas across Queensland.

Application forms are available from Sport and Recreation Service Centres, at www.nprsr.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 656 191 for assistance. Applications will remain open until Friday, May 10.
