Local footy season almost here

The Border Rugby League season is only weeks away from the opening Round Robin and there has been plenty of activity at the Wallangarra Sports Oval as the committee prepares to host the 2013 season opener on March 23rd.

Fixtures this year kick off on April 6th. Reigning premiers Inglewood be looking to start the season well as they prepare to defend their title. In a replay of the 2012 grand final the Roosters open their season with a game against the Gremlins in Inglewood. On the same day Wallangarra will host Texas and Killarney will be the first club to play newcomers Goondiwindi Red as their make first foray into the Border Rugby League.

This season there will be three rounds of seven games. The representative side, the Border Bushrangers will play a representative game in Stanthorpe in May against Northern division. There will also be representative opportunities for BRL players with South West Trials being played in Miles early in the season to select a south West Side to play in Kingaroy against Wide Bay. The south West side will once again play in the Outback Muster which this year will be hosted by Hughenden in June.

All clubs have held their sign on days and while it is still only early days, player numbers are encouraging.

Plenty of interest is expected from league followers with Goondiwindi fielding two teams in this year’s competition.
