First Nations people have gathered for a night of celebration and cultural pride at Warwick’s first ever NAIDOC ball on Saturday.

Hosted by Wahringhehn Aboriginal Corporation at Warwick RSL, the evening had been organised to celebrate this year’s NAIDOC week, the nationwide celebration of Indigenous culture held every July.

Githabul woman and Wahringhehn Aboriginal Corporation chairperson Melissa Chalmers said it was their first year hosting the event and declared the night “a success”.

“It was a great night of celebrating our culture with family, friends and community,” Ms Chalmers said.

“It was great to have the support of the mayor and the local council along with James Lister and [the] community,” she said.

“This will be an event we will be hosting every year.”

Early this year, Indigenous Australians were urged to “keep the fire burning” as per the theme for 2024 NAIDOC week.

Several events were staged in Warwick throughout the week including a street march and a flag raising ceremony.
