A generation never forgotten

The Stanthorpe community gathered solemnly on Vietnam Veterans Day to honour the 51st anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

The ceremony, held in Weroona Park, was led by RSL Subbranch President Martin Corbett, who spoke powerfully about the service and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans.

The day, originally known as Long Tan Day, was established to honour the men of D Company 6RAR who fought in the 1966 Battle of Long Tan.

Mr Corbett emphasised the significance of this day on the national calendar, noting that it serves as a time to remember all who served in Vietnam, especially the 521 men who made the ultimate sacrifice.

He also spoke about the ongoing impact of the war on veterans and their families, acknowledging the heavy burdens they continue to carry.

“Our Vietnam veterans are a remarkable generation of men and women who, together with their families, have fought hard to ensure that their service is never forgotten.”

“This ceremony provides an opportunity to reaffirm the common values and deep friendships forged through service,” he said.

The ceremony was an important reminder of the courage and resilience of Vietnam veterans and the enduring respect and gratitude owed to them by the nation.
