THREE State Government ministers said: Let there be light, and there was light, lots of it, turning Stanthorpe’s McGlew St sports complex as bright as day.
The switching-on of the new light towers completed a huge community effort that began in 1981 and will provide better sports facilities for thousands of local cricket, soccer, rugby and softball players.
Improvements to the oval will mean soccer players no longer have to play on a concrete cricket pitch covered in sawdust.
The lights and the improvements to the CF White Oval will extend the seasons of both soccer and cricket.
Local MP and Minister for Health Lawrence Springborg, Sports Minister Steve Dickson and Local Government Minister David Crisafulli joined around 200 locals for the official lighting of the oval.
Mr Crisafulli said his local government department had donated $150,000 after he found he could not wind back the clock on the local government amalgamation which created the Southern Downs Regional Council.
