Poetry in the streets

POETS, sharpen your quills, hone your images.
Tenterfield Shire Council is running a competition to find three original poems to go on new interpretative signs in Rouse Street.
The shire’s historical personalities J F Thomas, J H Reid and E R Whereat will each have a poem written about them.
As part of the improvements to the Federation precinct there will be a sign installed on each of the corners of the Post Office, Mitre10 and the Corner Store.
J F Thomas was a solicitor known for his vigorous defence of Harry “Breaker” Morant and as owner of the Tenterfield Star newspaper.
J H Reid was a tin mining millionaire, Tenterfield’s mayor for three terms and ran for federal politics. E R Whereat was six times the mayor and is credited with many progressive changes including the School of Arts, the railway, the hospital, and the Tenterfield Show.
The winning poems will be recited at the Oracles of the Bush Poets breakfast on Sunday 6 April 2014 and will receive $200 each.
They will then be included on the permanent interpretative signs in Tenterfield.
Entries close at 5pm, Friday 3 January. Entry is free and entry forms and the competition brief are available from: Tenterfield Shire Council’s Office, their website, or www.oraclesofthebush.com
