Gardens open their gates

Keith and Kayes Garden at Killarney.

TWO of the most beautiful gardens in the region will open their gates to the public next month as part of the Open Gardens Australia scheme.
The two gardens both in the Killarney area will open their gates on 8 and 9 March from 9am to dusk.
Keith and Kaye’s Garden at 1319 Yangan Killarney Road, Tannymorel (near Killarney) and the Melrose Station Garden at Barlows Gate Road, Killarney are both part of the national scheme aimed at opening up private gardens to the public.
Open Gardens Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that opens private gardens and organises garden-themed events for public enjoyment around the country.
The aim of the scheme, established in 1987, is to promote the enjoyment, knowledge, and benefits of gardens and gardening in the Australian community, and to build strong public support for the development of gardens across the nation.
Keith and Kaye’s garden is a tranquil and charming country garden that boasts beautiful views out over Farm Creek and on to the Great Dividing Range.
Exotic trees, including maples, liquidambars, elms and ashes, add splashes of vibrant autumn colour to well-tended emerald green lawns.
Beds frothing with white and pink ‘Iceberg’ roses are dotted with fascinating historic farm implements and machinery.
The Melrose Station garden is a rambling, park-like country garden surrounding a beautiful old homestead that has dreamy views of a pretty lake and a mountain range beyond.
Rolling green lawns host mature trees, including pecans and elegant weeping willows.
Brilliant pink standard roses underplanted with deeper pink carpet roses line gravel pathways. There is also a vegetable garden, a sandstone church and an old blacksmith’s shop.
Cost of entry is $7, free for under-18s and teas and light lunches will be available. Plants will be for sale at both venues with wine tasting at Melrose Station.
