Warwick residents give Brisbane trees a fashion makeover

Warwick resident Karina Devine is getting set to promote Warwick’s quirky Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival at the upcoming Textile Art Festival in Brisbane, June 11-13 at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre. She is hoping to entice some Brisbane crafties into making the two-hour trip to come see the town rugged up in their woollies for winter.
Starting back in 2004, the Jumpers and Jazz Festival is a celebration of all that is wonderful about winter and the festival owes it success to the community for embracing it.
Come July, Warwick will become a hub for music and celebration with 160 trees rugged up for the cold in brightly coloured, knitted jumpers.
The tree jumpers are donated from locals but some of the woollies travel from across Australia, New Zealand and even England. Each year, Jumpers and Jazz has a theme, this year being ‘Starry, Starry night’ so some trees may look as if they have just returned from a trip to the moon.
At the Textile Art Festival in Brisbane, Karina will be displaying some of her favourite tree jumpers on cardboard tree silhouettes including a crocheted cactus jumper so festival-goers can visually understand how Warwick turns into a woolly winter wonderland come July.
Karina hopes that her visit to the Textile Art Festival will entice visitors to Warwick’s novel event.
“The Textile Art Festival is the perfect platform to entice Brisbanites to come visit Jumpers and Jazz as they love craft and our whole town will be covered in it. There is so much to do at the festival with jazz music, craft workshops and art exhibitions – people from Brisbane would just love it so hopefully our visit to the Textile Art Festival will get us some more wintery visitors,” she said.
The multi-faceted Textile Art Festival is a textile lover’s dream consisting of a convention, workshop program, inspirational feature displays and a retail expo.
For just one entry price of $14, amateur and advanced crafters can look forward to being inspired by the endless seminars, classes, exhibitions and workshops by some of Australia’s and the world’s leading artists. There will also be non-stop shopping with the latest supplies and innovative products from specialty retailers under the one roof.
