SDRC honours Fish Stocking Association as citizen of the month

Southern Downs Regional Council recognised the significant contribution and dedication of the Warwick Fish Stocking Association in improving the public amenity of Leslie Dam at the 14 September Ordinary Council Meeting.

Cr Andrew Gale made the decision to honour the group, stating that he originally wanted to thank Bob Reid for his contributions but Bob had stated that he would only accept recognition if it went to the entire group.

“Bob has a certain style,” Cr Gale said. “Some would call it highly persuasive, others may call it belligerent.”

“Nonetheless he is very convincing.”

Cr Gale stated that “the Warwick Fish Stocking Association, a volunteer organisation, as well as undertaking their ‘core’ business of stocking native fish fingerlings to our impoundments in the northern part of our region have undertaken a number of projects that added greatly to the amenity at Leslie Dam”.

He stated they’d undertaken extensive cleaning up of the dam, which requires going through a lengthy process to obtain all the relevant permits.

“They even cleared sunken trees that were sunk by the rising water, creating navigation hazards.

“I saw Bob, Bill and others pulling these out utilising a truck equipped with a winch and a very long line,” Cr Gale said. “Often up to their waist and deeper, in the middle of winter.”

“As I watched from my boat I thought, gee that must be cold.”

Cr Gale highlighted a number of other upgrades the group has undertaken or is pursuing, including constructing some 691 fish habitats specifically for Murray Cod.

Cr Sheryl Windle added that every organisation needs a good leader and “Bob Reid is an example of what a good leader is”.

“Without him this wouldn’t have happened,” she said.

Cr Windle said it was a great award and one that a lot of people will appreciate.

Mayor Pennisi stated that these are the type of people that make communities.

He said these are the kinds of people who should be nominated for council Australia Day awards so we can celebrate volunteers like Bob.
