The Allora Photography Group’s July meeting brought members face-to-face with the unexpectedly challenging topic of “Silhouettes.” Despite the initial difficulty, members rose to the occasion, delivering a series of striking entries that showcased their creativity and technical skills.
Esteemed independent judge Tryg Hellander was tasked with evaluating the submissions and awarded two entries with top honours. Michelle’s “Man and Dog” stood out as a near-perfect representation of the silhouette theme. Tryg praised the image for being “razor-sharp, clean, interesting, unmistakable, and pretty much what a silhouette story looks like.”
Glenda’s imaginative entry, “Trumpeting in the Night,” which featured an elephant silhouette, also earned an Honour from Tryg. Although the elephant wasn’t real, the judge lauded the shot’s inventiveness and technical prowess, calling it a “top job.”
Another memorable submission came from Trevor, who captured “The Tree and the Windmill” on a hill behind the Allora cemetery. This distinctly Australian scene was recognised for its potential as a silhouette photograph during the Masters’ Apprentices Photography Club visit. Judge Tryg awarded it a Merit, noting that with a few minor tweaks, the photo could be even stronger.
Lisa’s entry, “The Fisherman,” also earned accolades, receiving a Highly Commended rating. The judge was impressed with the rim lighting that highlighted the fisherman’s outline, rod, and line. However, he noted that a missing metre of fishing rod might have cost the photo a higher score.
The group’s next judging night is scheduled for 7.00pm on September 11 at St Andrew’s Community Centre, located at 33 Forde St. (Cnr Warwick St.) in Allora. Graham Harris, President of the Toowoomba Photographic Society, will serve as the judge for two upcoming topics: “Fruit and Vegetables” and “Landmark.” The latter, closing on August 30, poses an intriguing challenge, requiring participants to submit one photograph each of the Boer War Memorial and Tiddilik in Warwick.
