School asbestos tests should be available this week

Asbestos testing results at Warwick West State School should be available later this week.

The Education Department’s acting deputy director general, Infrastructure Services, Graham Atkins, said the school community would be made aware of these results once they are available.

Warwick West State School reported 90 students were absent on January 28 alone.

“The work site involved is in a restricted area and is not accessible by staff or students. The Department is not considering closing the school, as areas outside of this restricted work site are safe for use by staff and students,” Mr Atkins said.

“Education Queensland has very strict asbestos management guidelines in place, and the safety of students and staff is its number one priority,” he said.

“Education Queensland has very stringent regulations in place to manage contractors working on school sites and any contractors found to have breached our asbestos management guidelines can be banned from working in Queensland State Schools.”

Warwick West State School P&C president Peter Wright said he was confident the school would receive the all-clear by Monday.

“It has been somewhat concerning and disruptive but I’m happy with the way the school and the Department ha taken it into consideration,” Mr Wright said.

“I just want to be ensured that the Education Department makes sure that this doesn’t happen again,” he said.
