Meals On Wheels opt for frozen food

The Warwick Meals On Wheels Committee will fold soon and, after nearly 50 years of catering for the local service, Robin and Margaret Hine’s meals have been replaced with frozen food.
The service has been taken over by Queensland Meals On Wheels and, according to regional support officer for the Southern region, Debbie Dennien, they had no other choice but to deliver frozen meals to clients to enable the continuation of the service in Warwick.
Ms Dennien said the search for a new commercial kitchen to take over the service in the Rose City had so far been unsuccessful.
She said microwaves had been given to clients who did not already own one so they or the delivery volunteers could heat the meals.
Mr Hine said it was an absolute privilege to cook the meals for one of the first Meals On Wheels services in Queensland.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to help others. We’ve been very proud to do this for the community,” he said.
But, he said, the time had come for the couple to lighten their workload and to concentrate on other aspects of their lives.
