Crowds set to flock to poultry auction

Silkies will be available at the Stanthorpe Poultry Club annual auction.
Whether you’re in the running for a pair of Australian Game Bantams or a trio of Old English Game Bantams the Stanthorpe Poultry Club annual auction is on again.
There will be a variety of breeds including Silkies, Seabrights, and Sussexes, dabbling ducks, gobbling turkeys and a gathering of geese. Also on auction there will be incubators, Gouldian finches, parrots and so much more.
The Stanthorpe Poultry Club invites all poultry fanciers to come along on Sunday, August 26, to the Stanthorpe Showgrounds in High Street.
Auction secretary Luke Hancock said viewing would open from 8.30am.
The auction will start at 9.30am in the main pavilion and the 231 lots will be displayed on a video screen during the auction.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with a wonderful variety of lots being offered from fanciers far and wide,” Mr Hancock said.
President Bruce Haslingden said, “The club’s annual auction always has a great selection of birds. We have one of the oldest of the rare breeds of poultry on auction – the Silkie. Marco Polo wrote about seeking Silkies during his travels in the Orient in 1200 AD. These birds are wonderful little layers and a great pet for children.
“This will be a cash only auction and don’t forget to bring along your own cage to take home your prized purchase.
“There will be something for everybody, whether you are just starting out or a seasoned breeder. So come along and enjoy a great morning,” he said.
The event will be well catered for at the Ringmaster’s Cafe, with a big breakfast and other delights available from 7am. The club will be running a raffle on the day.
