Tall tales stretch the truth

STANTHORPE Toastmasters Club members recently travelled to Toowoomba to compete in the annual Tall Tales, Novice and Interpretive Reading contests.
Robert Walker joined the Stanthorpe Toastmasters Club in March and in spite of only having presented one speech, stepped forward to compete in the Novice Speech contest.
Although Mr Walker didn’t place, he felt the competition experience was an opportunity not to be missed.
Club president Susan Butterfield of Tenterfield, came up against some tough competition in her first attempt at presenting in the highly contested Tall Tales contest.
The criteria for the Tall Tales contest was to provide a speech that is of a highly exaggerated, improbable nature with a theme or plot – the winning presentation, as an example, was titled “Crocodiles Can’t Climb Trees”.
First time Interpretive Reading competitor Marissa Moncada blew the competition away with her rendition of a children’s story called ‘Mr Rude’ by Roger Hargreaves.
For her outstanding effort, Marissa received a first place trophy as a memento of her winning presentation.
Stanthorpe Toastmasters meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in the learning centre at the Stanthorpe State High School.
Visitors are always welcome to attend meetings to observe the format and enjoy a cuppa during the break.
