Runners range the forest

By JONATHON HOWARD

THE Leyburn State Forest, west of Warwick, will be the venue for an orienteering event on Sunday, 28 July.
The event will be conducted by Toowoomba’s Range Runners Orienteering Club.
President of the Range Runners Club, Felicity Crosato, said the forest was first mapped and used for orienteering for the Queensland Championships in 2007 and competitors enjoyed the open nature of the forest and the challenges of navigating in its complex watercourses.
“As well as the courses we will have for our regular competitors, Sunday’s event will also have short, easy courses for beginners and there will be instruction available on the basic map reading and navigational skills,” she said.
“Anyone interested in trying out orienteering is most welcome to attend. No special gear is required, although sturdy footwear and a hat are recommended – compasses may be borrowed at the event.”
Mrs Crosato said that a number of the region’s junior orienteers in the Darling Downs team were expected to attend the Leyburn event for some training ahead of the Queensland Schools Orienteering Championships to be held in July.
Starting times for Sunday’s event will be between 9am and 10.30am.
The assembly area for the event will be on Forestry Road, 7km east of Leyburn.
