Singing sensation Mirusia wowed the Stanthorpe audience when she performed as part of a special Night at the Proms on Saturday night 6 April.

About 300 people attended the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe’s single performance fundraiser, enjoying a range of music presented by the Clarence Valley Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Greg Butcher, well known for producing large scale community-based entertainment.

Mirusia, who was nicknamed the Angel of Australia by famed Dutch violinist André Rieu during a decade as his star soprano, brought her crossover virtuosity to music including O Mio Babbino Caro, Il Bacio, Ave Maria, Beautiful That Way and a medley featuring I Still Call Australia Home and Waltzing Matilda.

The visiting orchestra was joined by Stanthorpe and Warwick musicians and presented audience favourites like the Typewriter Song, Radetzky March and themes from West Side Story.

The 50-strong chorus made a big sound, with singers from the Grafton area joined by members of the Granite Belt Choir and East Street Singers to deliver four-part harmonies on such varied songs as the swoon-worthy Cantique de Jean Racine, Vivaldi’s Gloria and the irreverently enjoyable Can Can.
