Dedicated to milestone

The Stanthorpe State School 150th Celebrations Committee, formed in June 2023, has been hard at work for over a year, meticulously planning the upcoming anniversary events.

Led by Lucian Giles-Duffy, the chair of the committee and former P&C president, the team has been dedicated to ensuring that the school’s rich history is properly honoured.

“It’s typical for the P&C committee to take on the task of organising school anniversaries,“ Lucian explained.

“When I took on the role last year, I knew the significance of this milestone, and that it required a dedicated group to bring the vision to life.“

The committee is composed of current P&C members, acting principal Christine Williamson, several current teachers, and a few past students and former P&C members. Together, they have invested countless hours in planning the celebration, driven by a shared commitment to the school and its legacy.

“These milestones give schools and communities an opportunity to reflect on the significant role that schools play,“ Lucian said.

“It’s not just about the lessons learned and the educational opportunities, but also the friendships forged, the life skills gained, and the impact that schooling has on shaping resilient individuals.“

One of the key projects for the anniversary is a commemorative paver initiative. Current and past families have the chance to order personalised pavers, which will be used in a paved area around the school’s iconic bell tower, established in 1925.

Lucian highlighted that the pavers provide a lasting tribute to those who have been part of the school’s journey.

“People have until 4 October to order a paver, and these will become a permanent part of the school, marking the contributions of families and individuals throughout its history.“

The committee also reflects on other commemorative efforts, such as the creation of a school song in 2023. Funded by a RADF grant through the Southern Downs Regional Council, the song was composed with the help of country music songwriter Josh Arnold.

“The students were involved in every step of the process, from creating the lyrics to rehearsing and filming. It was a wonderful project that connected the current generation with the school’s legacy.“

Stanthorpe State School has played a diverse role in the community over the past 150 years. Until 1962, it served as both a primary and high school. “When the State High School opened on McGlew Street in 1962, the high schoolers literally carried their books up the hill,“ Lucian said.

The school, once known as Stanthorpe State and Rural School, has a rich history, including teaching practical skills like leatherwork, home economics, and manual arts—skills that past students, now in their 80s, still fondly remember.

“Although our community is predominantly agricultural, families here continue to value education deeply,“ Lucian said.

“Our staff put considerable effort into broadening the horizons of our students, ensuring that they receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for the future.“

“It’s been a huge amount of work, but the dedication of the committee members and the support from the community will make this a celebration to remember,“ Lucian said.
