There’s no place like a new home

Sixteen individuals from around the globe took the Oath of Allegiance last Tuesday at Stanthorpe Civic Centre to become naturalised Aussies.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi welcomed the new Australian citizens from a number of countries including India and New Zealand.

Each conferee was gifted an Australian native brooch and plant before enjoying a morning tea of Australian delights including mini cheese and vegemite scrolls, Anzac biscuits and lamingtons.

The ceremony celebrated bringing people from diverse cultures together and is a special moment in the lives of those who have chosen to call Australia their home.

Suzanne Robins has been living and working in Stanthorpe for about 20 years and has wanted to become an Australian citizen for just as long.

The owner of the Curves fitness studio said she was proud to be Stanthorpe’s newest citizens and felt proud to now be an Australian.

Suzanne and her husband Alan came over from New Zealand and settled in Allora.

“My husband had family there. We ended up moving to Stanthorpe in 2006.”

Suzanne said Stanthorpe reminds her of where she grew up.

“Where I’m from is smaller than this region but very similar with the beautiful pine forests, orchards and vineyards.”

Suzanne and her husband had originally applied together for citizenship.

They hoped to become known as Aussies on the same day, however that was not to be.

Alan was nationalised earlier this year in a smaller ceremony at Warwick.

“Our children are looking forward to becoming Australian citizens as well,” Suzanne said.

“They were ten and eleven when we came to Australia.”

Suzanne and Alan are also proud grandparents to an Australian baby.
