Heavy rain is forecast for the region.

With much of Victoria and New South Wales already experiencing a deluge of rain, it’s just a matter of time before the Southern Downs region is drenched once again.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology significant rain is forecast, so brace yourself for some very wet conditions.

The threat of flooding is imminent as rain is predicted late Tuesday evening right through to Monday next week.

Forecast for Tuesday:

Medium 50 per cent chance of rain, most likely later in the evening.

Wednesday 19 October:

Very high 95 per cent chance of showers. Heavy falls possible in the west. 20 to 30 km/h northeasterly winds.

Thursday 20 October:

Very high 95 per cent chance of showers. Chance of a thunderstorm. Heavy falls possible in the east. Winds northeasterly 20 to 30km/h.

Friday 21 October:

Very high 90 per cent chance of showers with a chance of a thunderstorm. Winds slowing to 15-25 km/h.

Be prepared for flooding by having an emergency plan.

Recommendations for your safety and the safety of others are found on several websites, however the most important thing to note is to evacuate when advised.

An emergency kit is essential in the case of extreme weather events.

These can consist of:

• Long life food and toiletries in case you can’t get to the shops

• Drinking water in case the water supply stops working

• Batteries, a torch and a radio in case the power goes out.

The Southern Downs Regional Council says living in a region susceptible to flooding triggers a need for a level of awareness in our community.

“As a community, the best way we can protect ourselves and minimise the effects of floods or any disaster is to be prepared.”
