While the treasures and records in the time capsule buried in a brick wall along Quart Pot Creek are sure to hold some exciting records about Stanthorpe, the use of a Delorean to drive back to the future will not be needed.

The Lions Club of Stanthorpe opened the forgotten time capsule over the weekend to learn what long-hidden gems were inside.

A crowd of curious community members gathered to look at the display of contents.

Secretary for the Lions Club of Stanthorpe Stuart Perrett said it was overwhelming.

“The capsule was only half full, but there was so much stuff inside,” Mr Perrett said.

“It was originally meant to be opened in 2013; however, the capsule had been forgotten.”

The capsule was an initiative of the now-defunct Stanthorpe Community Service Club and was sealed in 1988 as part of the nation’s bicentenary.

At that time Gordon Funk was involved, and over the weekend he was there to see the viewing of contents.

The Lions Club of Stanthorpe intend to have another public display of the parcels and treasures in the future and would also like to invite organisations, schools and industry bodies to add to the capsule.

“In the contents, we found some parcels for the schools, photographs, family trees and lots more.”

closing the capsule at the end of the year to wrap up the 150th of Stanthorpe Celebrations.

New Items for the time capsule can be taken to the Tourist Information Centre over the next couple of weeks.
