The first public fast chargers have been installed in Stanthorpe, making it easier for drivers to charge their electric cars.

The four charging outlets are located in the southwest corner of the Rogers Street car park and offer different speeds, including fast chargers.

The Queensland Electric Super Highway (QESH), Yurika, as part of Energy Queensland, is in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Southern Downs Regional Council to provide state-of-the-art chargers.

Visitors to the region will now be able to stay in the Granite Belt while charging their vehicles, while those passing through have the opportunity to charge while enjoying the streetscape, shops and cafes of the town.

In 2021 an additional 18 charging locations were identified throughout the state of Queensland as part of the extension of the Queensland Electric Super Highway (QESH) Stage 3 and Southern Downs was one.

Locations were selected based on their proximity to the highway and to an existing distribution transformer/substation and to amenities.

The stations are operated by Yurika, and will be accessible 24/7.

The chargers are user pay, via the ChargeFox service and are also visible on Plugshare, an international EV changing network resource, so that EV users can find them.

The tariff to use the EV Charging stations is $0.30c/kWh with the estimated average cost in the market is between $0.30-$0.60c/kWh.
