Stanthorpe nbn users might experience outages in a few weeks as work starts locally on upgrades to the Fixed Wireless network.

The planned outages were required during tower upgrades and could impact the ability of people to use their nbn services at their homes and businesses.

Head of nbn Local Queensland Kylie Lindsay said upgrade works on a tower usually only required a total of three or four planned service outages over one or two weeks.

Impacted homes and businesses should be notified of any outages by their retail service provider, but information was also available on the nbn website, www.nbnco.com.au/support/network-status, she said.

She said the work was part of a $750 million investment in Fixed Wireless and the Sky Muster satellite network across Australia.

Business would be advised if they needed to update their nbn devices at their premises to get the benefits of the upgrade.

The rollout of the program is on track to be completed at the end of next year and will expand the reach of the existing nbn fixed wireless footprint by at least 50 per cent as well as enabling two new high speed fixed wireless plans.

It will use 4G technology and software enhancements and introduce 5G mmWave technology to deliver more coverage and higher speed tiers.
