Streetscape back on the agenda

The Stanthorpe CBD streetscape project is back on the agenda. So far it has happened in fits and starts, with the biggest part of the project so far accomplished being the Rogers Street Carpark (down one street from the main street) and the connecting Fromes Lane, which was beautified with timber features, colourful art and ornamental grapevines.

It’s a project that has been years in the making, but the Southern Downs Regional Council announced on 11 April that council’s project staff were working with a contractor to fine-tune Stage 1 and ’make sure the updated concept reflects the community’s vision for a town centre that manages the needs of shoppers, businesses, tourists, cars and pedestrians, while still maintaining that special Stanthorpe feel’.

The council is currently liaising with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to obtain sign-off on proposed designs. After that round of consultation with TMR on updated and improved crossing designs, Councillors will be briefed then further community and business consultation will be undertaken to discuss a proposed formal crossing in High Street and maximise car parking spaces in the area.

Southern Downs Councillor Stephen Tancred said he looked forward to the project progressing to the next stage.

“Stanthorpe is renowned for its vibrant and diverse food, music and arts scene and the CBD precinct is alive with the town’s unique country charm and quirky localised art,” he said.

“The streetscape project is a labour of love for the community and it’s important that the details of the plan reflect the community’s vision to design a town centre for both locals and visitors to enjoy. It has to be practical but welcoming.”
