Southern Cross bowlers Geoff Davis and Geoff Creighton made a flying raid on the Tannymore; Bowls Club on Saturday and took home the cash in the 'Play for the Pot' Pairs.

IN THE MONEY

Southern Cross Bowlers have been out an about around the region competing at other local bowls clubs.

A pair of ‘Geoffs’ headed to Tannymorel on Saturday and played the “Play for the Pot” competition with the duo Geoff Davis and Geoff Creighton coming home with the win.

Dave Scotney, Kim Hankinson, Matt Shepherd and Clark Davidson tried a similar raid, heading to Goondiwindi for the two day Open Fours Carnival. They did not win but wrangled a second place and a share of the prizemoney.

Meanwhile back at headquarters social games of three bowl fours were played. The skips certainly faced a challenge with all the bowls to manoeuvre around.

Reggie, Barry Frame and Peter Ridgewell with “Super Skip” Barry Ziebell managed to score a 12-9 win over the team of Peter Klowss, Brett Patrick and Joe Torrisi skipped by Pat Gainey.

VARYING CONDITIONS

Conditions on the green at the Stanthorpe Bowls club were quite pleasant for the group playing social pairs on Wednesday (28/6), not so for those on Saturday. The varying conditions kept bowlers on their toes.

In a close game the team of David Draper and Len Girgenti scored a two shot win over Polly Lay and David Rose. The final score 17-15 after Lay and rose squandered a 13-4 lead at the half way mark. On an adjacent rink Caroline Draper, Margaret Harvey and Brian Brown proved too strong for Colin Denning, Dot Rankin and Greg Hammond. They scored a comfortable 16-7 win.

On Saturday a number of members had prior commitments at the Snowflakes in Stanthorpe” event which significantly impacted numbers on the green. Only two games of pairs were played. Caroline Draper and Brian Brown defeated Helen Jones and Rocky Thompson scored a one shot win in a thrilling game. The final score 15-14.thriller by 15 shots to 14. Colin Denning and Greg Hammond had a more comfortable win in their game against David Draper and Polly Lay. The score 19 shots – 8.

The Stanthorpe “Turkey Triples” was scheduled for the first Wednesday of the month weather permitting. Full details in next week’s paper. BOWLERS BRAVE THE ELEMENTS

The Snowflakes in Stanthorpe event was in full swing on Saturday and bowlers on the green at the Summit were reasonably certain Snowflakes had extended to their club such were the conditions.

Eight players braved the elements and played social bowls. Rob Capelli, Michael Sweeney, David Stibbard and Tyler Sweeney scored a one shot win over Rod Crome, Adrian Jackson, Brian Wilmot and Jamie Zamprogno. The final score 10-9.

The monthly barbeque was held at the club last Friday night and the response from the community was excellent. More support from club members would make these nights even more successful.

VARIETY ON MALLET COURT

Something different for Croquet players at the Stanthorpe Mallet Club last Tuesday 27 June. Ricochet Croquet was the discipline of choice.

Ricochet Croquet is an Australian variant of Association Croquet, developed in the 1980s as an easy to learn version. The game has similar rules to Association. The major difference is if a ball is ricochet (your ball strikes another), two free shots are earned. This enables the player to play close to another ball, hit that and earn another two shots, until you get your ball into a position to play and score a hoop, where you earn one free shot.

Grace Howard and Pauline Smith played against Joy Newman and Jenny Tunbridge. Tunbridge managed two balls in a row, while Smith got two balls in a row on two occasions. But this it was not enough to catch Tunbridge and Newman who won the game 26 – 22.

Golf Croquet Golf Croquet was favoured discipline on Wednesday 28/6.

In the opening game Kathy Hopgood and Liz Ellway played Di Wren and Shirley Page. Ellway played well and scored the most hoops during the game (7). She and Hopgood won the game 11-5.

In the next game Shirley Page and Kathy Hopgood combined to play Di Wren and Liz Ellway. Both Wren and Hopgood played well and scored nine and eight hoops respectively. Wren and Ellway went on to win the game 13 to 10.
