Love is a beautiful journey, and for one extraordinary couple, it has spanned an impressive six decades. Ernie and Marlene Jones, residents of Stanthorpe, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Their love story began many years ago when they first met at a dance in Melbourne. Ernie, having just been discharged from the Navy, instantly felt a connection with Marlene and the two soon tied the knot.

They initially lived in Melbourne before deciding to move to Queensland in 1966 to be closer to family. Settling in Albany Creek, they found a little house to call their own and built a life together.

Throughout their 60 years of marriage, Ernie and Marlene have shared countless memories and experiences. Ernie worked in the used car industry for a period and later transitioned to a career in finance and banking. They even spent some time living in Papua New Guinea for five years before eventually settling down in their Stanthorpe home 15 years ago.

Reflecting on their life together, Ernie fondly remembers how he knew Marlene was the one for him. “She was just so nice, I couldn’t say a bad thing about her. It was just a feeling that never changed,“ he said.

As for the proposal, Ernie recalls, with a little help from Marlene, a unique moment during a drive-in movie. The couple was watching the 1970s musical “76 Trombones,“ when he mustered up the courage to ask Marlene to be his wife. The details of the movie may have faded over time, but the significance of that moment has remained etched in their hearts.

When asked about their secret to marital longevity, Ernie revealed that listening to each other’s point of view and being understanding have been key factors in their successful journey.

Their ability to communicate and respect each other’s perspectives has allowed them to weather the storms and cherish the joys that life has brought their way. Here’s to many more years of happiness.
