The pilot of a light plane which crashed into a paddock at Palgrave, north west of Stanthorpe, has died, authorities have confirmed.

In a statement to media on Thursday afternoon, police said initial investigations determined no one else was believed to be on board the aircraft at the time of the incident which occurred just after midday on 19 October.

“Initial investigations indicate the pilot of the plane did not survive the crash,” a statement said.

“Investigators will work with officials from Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAUS) to determine the cause of the crash.”

Earlier that day, emergency crews descended on a property on Palgrave Road amid reports that a single occupant aircraft had crashed into a field, sparking a grass fire.

Police, firefighters and paramedics attended the crash site. A Lifeflight rescue helicopter was also called, but was eventually turned away.

A spokesman for QFES said a landowner helped create a firebreak to contain the fire.

The welfare of the pilot was not known until late that afternoon.

Police have said investigations are ongoing.
