Fire crews have rushed to contain several reportedly small grass fires just south of Stanthorpe.

Approximately five crews were called to the scene of a vegetation fire at Thorndale just after midday on Thursday.

It is understood crews have since been conducting a backburn.

Nearby at Severnlea, a small grass fire was reported just off the side of the New England Highway.

A spokesman for QFES said two crews responded to the blaze near River Lane at about 12.45pm

The spokesman said the fire had been brought under control by just after 1pm.

It is not known how either of the fires started.

Lightning strikes were observed throughout the region earlier in the day.
