As 2024 unfolds, the musical journey for Stanthorpe’s own Nine Year Sister is scaling new heights, firmly establishing them as trailblazers in the independent music scene.

The duo, comprised of sisters Jennie and Emma Wardle, has etched their names in history by becoming the first band to secure the coveted Artist of the Year title twice in a row in Radio TFSC’s competition.

Outshining over 2600 international indie artists, Nine Year Sister claimed the top spot for 2023, marking a significant achievement for the talented siblings.

Their success was not just a personal milestone but also a historic moment for the Global station’s Artist of the Year competition.

“When we heard the news, we were so surprised and grateful, and we just couldn’t believe how lucky we were to not only win Artist of the Year but to win it twice in a row,” the sisters said.

The rankings are determined by the performance of songs on the radio throughout the year. Making it into the daily top 24 on the station significantly boosts the chances of securing the Artist of the Year title. However, public voting also plays a crucial role, and Nine Year Sister acknowledged their fans for contributing to their success.

Reflecting on their growth between the Artist of the Year 2022 and 2023 Jennie and Emma boil it down to learning and experience.

“The more time goes by, the more you learn. You gather new ideas and develop new skills that you are able to utilise in your creative projects. Extra experience behind your belt is always a good thing,” they said.

To bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024, Nine Year Sister graced the stage at the Woodford Folk Festival, located three hours from Stanthorpe. Describing it as a dream come true, they expressed their gratitude for the opportunity and the positive response from the audience.

The icing on the cake came during their midnight journey home from the festival when the band learned of their top spot win.

“We were announced in 1st place, and they played our brand new track which we cranked up and sang at the top of our lungs.

“It was a moment we won’t forget,” the sisters said.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2024, Nine Year Sister has set ambitious goals, with plans to continue performing at local gigs, creating new music, and participating in upcoming festivals.
