The Stanthorpe State High School recently hosted visitors from its sister city, Shiwa, located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.

From Sunday, 25 February to Thursday, 29 February, 10 junior-high students and two staff members from Shiwa embarked on a memorable journey to Stanthorpe.

The relationship between Stanthorpe State High School and Shiwa has long been a source of excitement for both the local school and the wider community.

A warm welcome awaited the Japanese delegation upon their arrival at Stanthorpe High School on Sunday afternoon. Host families, school staff, and the Mayor of the Southern Downs Regional Council, Vic Pennisi, extended heartfelt greetings and assurances of a hospitable stay.

Transitioning into life with their host families might have initially seemed daunting for the Japanese students, but the warmth and sincerity of the Stanthorpe hosts quickly dispelled any apprehensions, ensuring a sense of belonging and comfort throughout their stay.

During their time in Stanthorpe, the Shiwa students and staff immersed themselves in a myriad of enriching activities. From cookery classes to industrial design and technology workshops, and from exploring visual arts to experiencing the workings of the school’s farms, the visitors engaged in a diverse array of educational pursuits.

They also participated in English language learning sessions and seamlessly integrated into regular classroom activities alongside their Australian counterparts.

As the brief yet memorable visit drew to a close, the Stanthorpe community reflected with joy and gratitude upon the enriching experiences shared with their friends from Shiwa. The exchange not only strengthened the ties between the sister cities but also left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all involved.

While bidding farewell, Stanthorpe expressed its heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity to host the Shiwa delegation, eagerly anticipating future exchanges that will continue to foster friendship and cultural understanding between the two communities.
