If you have a passion for quaint little houses on wheels or you have fond memories of the halcyon days of caravanning in the 1960s and ’70s, this Sunday 28 April is the day to make sure you’re out and about in Stanthorpe.

That’s when you’ll have the chance to enjoy a vintage van vibe, strolling around and peeking inside retro caravans as you experience some of the caravanning heritage of the country at the Vintage Caravan Nationals.

The event is being held across the Top of the Town Caravan Park and the Stanthorpe Showgrounds, right next door to each other.

More than 140 vintage and classic caravans will be at the caravan park while the youngsters – built in 1980 or later – will stay at the showgrounds.

Sunday attractions from 9am to 1pm will include the Stanthorpe Historic Vehicles and Machinery Group display at the showgrounds and a Mini Owners Club display. As well, there’ll be a Vintage Market at the showgrounds.

Or join some early action with a show and tell by the Stanthorpe Historic Vehicles from 4pm Friday 26 April.

Historically a biennial event, the Nationals will be held for the first the first since 2020 and for the first time ever in Queensland.

One of the volunteer organisers, Kim Bayne of Ballina, said people would see a whole host of old-fashioned vans, with brands from Olympic to Sunliner. This year also celebrates the 90th anniversary of the birth of Don caravans and Jennison caravans.

“We love our vintage and classic caravans,” she said.

“We are expecting people from all over. South Australia has a big fraternity so we’re expecting visitors from there, plus Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland of course and even a couple from Western Australia.

“Some people even have classic towing vehicles.”

The vintage van folks are in town for a full week of touring around the Granite Belt.
