The Wallangarra Jennings Men’s Shed has embarked on its journey with a successful open day, drawing considerable interest from the local community.

After several attempts over the years, the small border towns are determined to establish the Men’s Shed as a vital community resource.

Brendan Cusack, the newly elected president, expressed the team’s dedication to making the shed a thriving hub after recognising the need for such a space in the community.

“I know some people use men’s sheds for the social aspect and others want a bit of activity, we will see what happens here as we continue to grow,” Mr Cusack said.

Starting with a group of seven members, the shed’s roster has quickly expanded to 20, with three more joining during the recent open day.

Notably, the membership includes several women, reflecting the inclusive approach adopted by the shed’s organisers.

“We made the decision early in the piece that because it was such a small community we couldn’t exclude the women,” he said.

Despite initial scepticism from some quarters, the response to the Men’s Shed initiative has been overwhelmingly positive.

Mr Cusack believes that momentum is building steadily, laying a solid foundation for the shed’s future endeavours.

Currently operating from a temporary location leased from St. Mary’s Parish, the shed’s organisers are actively working with the council to secure a permanent site.

With an application already submitted and a shed awaiting installation in Mr Cusack’s backyard, the team is optimistic about starting building operations by the year’s end.

The official location for the Wallangarra Jennings Men Shed will be next to the School of Arts building and they are looking at operating three days a week.

Mr Cusack extends a warm invitation to individuals from both sides of the border who are interested in joining the Men’s Shed initiative.

“We would love to see anyone who is interested in joining up to come along and help us make it a real success.”
