Residents and visitors of Southern Downs can anticipate improved public facilities as redevelopment works commence on four key public toilet blocks and a picnic shelter.
The Southern Downs Regional Council has undertaken these upgrades as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance facilities across the region, aiming to create welcoming and accessible spaces that promote community enjoyment.
Southern Downs Deputy Mayor Sheryl Windle said that the improved public amenities will serve as an investment in the region’s growth and create welcoming and accessible spaces that promote community enjoyment.
“Parks and open spaces are essential for creating liveable, sustainable and resilient communities. They offer a range of benefits that enhance our quality of life and contribute to the health and well-being of our communities,” Deputy Mayor Windle said.
“Council is working on a series of redevelopment projects aimed at bolstering community facilities across the region and these projects have been selected based on feedback and collaboration with the community.
Funded by the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program – Phase 3, in addition to contributions from Sunwater and the Queensland Community Fishing Grants Program, the $1.12 million project aims to modernise facilities while supporting local industries and businesses.
During construction, the existing toilet block at Brock Park will remain open while temporary toilets will be provided at Jim Mitchell Park.
“With the assistance of government funding, Council is delivering much-needed facility upgrades that will provide locals and visitors with modern, functional and practical amenities, Cr Windle said.
“These projects also serve to support industry, businesses and the resilience of the local economy.
“By investing in the upgrade of public toilet blocks and recreational facilities, Council is laying the groundwork for a more vibrant and prosperous community, fostering growth and opportunity for residents and businesses alike.”
The redevelopment projects, which include new toilet blocks and picnic shelters, are expected to be completed by 30 June, 2024. Council assures the community that all closures will be kept to a minimum, with regular updates provided via social media.
Funding for the projects is sourced from the Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program for the Jim Mitchell, McGregor, and Brock Park initiatives, while the Leslie Dam project receives funding from Sunwater.
