A plastering firm subcontracted to work on the Stanthorpe Art Gallery expansion has launched legal action to recover money owed by the project’s initial contractors and Australian building giant St Hilliers.

Gold Coast-based plasterers Icon Linings launched the lawsuit in Brisbane’s Supreme Court in March this year, court records showed, just weeks after St Hilliers collapsed into voluntary administration and ceased construction on the landmark building project.

Southern Downs Regional Council had initially awarded St Hilliers the project contract in August 2022.

Court records indicated legal action had been filed against the council as well as St Hilliers.

In a statement, a council spokeswoman confirmed a charge notice had been issued by Icon Linings “to recover unpaid costs” from the initial contractor of the art gallery project.

“Council confirms that the matter is under the management of legal representation and cannot comment further during this process,” the spokeswoman said.

“Icon Linings remains a creditor of St Hilliers for the debts outstanding,” she said.

St Hilliers and Icon Linings were contacted for comment but neither replied before deadline.
