The Women and Girls Open Day at Massie Aerodrome, hosted by the Warwick Gliding Club over the weekend, was a resounding success.

The exclusive event, which offered adventurous women and girls the chance to experience the magic of flight, sold out quickly with all 25 spots filled across the weekend.

President of Warwick Gliding Club Nigel Andrews said it was a very successful weekend that highlighted the sport which is for everyone.

“Most of the ladies who attended were local, and it was wonderful to see such a strong turnout from our community.“

Participants enjoyed two flights each, guided by expert pilots who shared their passion for aviation and ensured a safe and memorable experience. The event provided an opportunity for attendees to connect with fellow adventurers, share stories, and discover the joys of silent flight against the backdrop of the Warwick area.

“Gliding is an activity that most can participate in,“ Nigel said.

“In the past, we have funded flying scholarships, mostly aimed at younger students, and many locals have participated.

“Our membership is roughly 80 percent from out of town and 20 percent live locally. Of the 20 percent, at least 10 percent moved here to fly, bought homes, and started businesses.“

The Warwick Gliding Club has been an integral part of the community for 60 years, attracting visitors who contribute to the local economy by staying in the area, eating at local restaurants, and buying fuel.

The club’s impact extends beyond just the thrill of flight, fostering a sense of community and economic growth.

To mark its 60th anniversary, the Warwick Gliding Club is planning a big celebration in October, featuring an open day to the public and displays of vintage gliders. The exact date is yet to be announced, but the event promises to be a highlight of the year for aviation enthusiasts and the local community alike.

“We are excited about our upcoming celebrations and look forward to welcoming even more people to experience the joy of gliding,” Nigel said.

“This sport has a rich history and a vibrant future, and we are proud to be a part of it.“
