On Vietnam Veterans Day, the Stanthorpe community gathered to honour those who served in the Vietnam War, with Major John Brien (retired) delivering a heartfelt address.

A veteran of the conflict himself, Mr Brien served Australia for 21 years, much of it during the Vietnam War.

In his speech, Mr Brien paid tribute to both regular soldiers and National Servicemen, known as “Nashos,” who were conscripted to serve.

“As an Australian regular army patrol commander, I saw little difference between the volunteer soldiers and the Nashos,” Mr Brien said.

“In fact, quite often, the Nashos participated with the regular army at all levels and excelled.”

Reflecting on the harsh realities of war, Mr Brien highlighted the sacrifices made during famous battles like Long Tan, as well as the relentless day-to-day operations.

“Vietnam was not just about the big battles,” he noted. “It involved patrolling in the jungle for weeks on end, with the constant threat of the enemy behind every tree or across the next creek.”

Major Brien concluded his address by expressing his pride in serving with those who fought in Vietnam.

“The pinnacle of my career was serving with you guys,” he said.

“Your bravery, resilience, and dedication will never be forgotten.”
